Will my teeth move after I’ve had braces?

Wearing braces produces fantastic results to improve a person’s smile and boost self-confidence. It is important to note that teeth have a type of ‘memory’, which means that without wearing retainers after braces, they will have a tendency to shift back into their original position.

If you are committed to wearing braces, whether they be traditional braces or invisible aligners, it is important to understand that retainers must be worn for life after treatment with braces is complete.

Retainer Systems

There are two main types of retainer systems:

  1. Fixed wires. These wires are bonded to the back of your front teeth, and so will keep the teeth in position. The bonded wires cannot be removed.
  2. Removable retainers. These retainers resemble a plate that can be inserted and removed. They are typically worn only at night.

Whichever retainer system is better for you depends on the type of tooth movement that has occurred with braces and also personal preference. Your dentist or orthodontist can advise you on which retainer is best for you.
